Trying to net a mate on Web

by Jenice Armstrong

BLAIRE ALLISON is running out of time. Nearly two years ago, she set a goal of getting engaged by December 2004. That means she has only 78 days to go. But first she must find a man.

So the 27-year-old New Jersey resident has created a Web site, www.marryblaire.com, to help her find and snag a groom. "Do you know my husband?" is written in large letters across the top of the page, which lists a daily countdown to the date by which she wants her ring. (Eeeww, just writing this makes me cringe.)

Girlfriend has no shame.

Although she hasn't yet settled on Mr. Right, Allison has become a media darling, appearing on "Inside Edition," MSNBC and CNN. She's been written up in the New York Times and the Newark Star-Ledger, fielded calls from producers from "Good Morning America" and the "Today Show," and been interviewed by Glamour magazine.

Catching up with Allison, who'll be in Cherry Hill on Saturday participating in a charity fund-raiser, proved to be difficult. We traded phone messages and e-mails for more than a week before I actually got to talk to the "bride-to-be" as she calls herself.

"I'm either out dating or at a social event or taking time for myself," Allison explained yesterday. "I've been meeting such great men I would never have met before.  "There are a lot of guys out there who are looking for commitment," she said.  (Oh, yeah, like on what planet?) Allison swears that since she started being up-front about marriage, she's begun meeting plenty of guys who want the same thing.

"We're trained from an early age to never bring up commitment or marriage around men," Allison said. "I'm much more honest. I'm much more out there about what I want.

"I need a man that is going to be open with his emotions and how he feels with me and discussing future plans - not this tough guy, the stereotypical man. I don't want that," said Allison, who works as an event planner and as a self-proclaimed "love coach." "These men that I've been dating... they want to know where they stand with me, how do I feel."

Apparently, she's touched a nerve. Even before her Web site was fully operational, Allison began getting e-mails from potential dates and people curious about her tactics. She's also attracted her share of detractors who say what she's doing smacks of desperation.

"Why can't she just enjoy her relationship for what it is? You date," a friend of mine asked. "Take it for how long it lasts and move on. What are you trying to get out of marriage?"

Allison counters that she's just a marrying kind of gal. As of late yesterday, she was juggling two prospective grooms - someone in the music industry and a teacher. And by now, she may have added another to her list. (She had yet another blind date lined up for last night.)

After all, the clock is ticking.

Blaire Allison is one of the singles to be auctioned off at 5 p.m. Saturday at the Top Dog, 2130 W. Marlton Pike, Cherry Hill. Tickets are $30 at the door. The event, which will be emceed by Daily News Sexy Single Steven Ward of It's About Time! - a matchmaking firm - is the second annual Delaware Valley Date Auction benefiting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
