Rebuffed by Blaire, he's now available as a boy toy

Tuesday, July 20, 2004

By Matt Katz

I was nervous. I was so nervous that I was making my hands sweaty because I was nervous that my hands were getting sweaty.

After all, this was no ordinary date. This was Blaire Allison. The Blaire Allison.

In case you have missed the Internet phenomenon that is www.MarryBlaire.com, this is the story: Blaire Allison turned 27 on Friday. She is attractive, smart and savvy. And she wants to be engaged before the end of the year.

So she started a Web site that has exploded in the last month, drawing hundreds of thousands of hits and garnering attention from the American Media Empire: The New York Times, MSNBC and Matt Katz.

Blaire did absolutely no advertising. The site was passed on by the power of the Web - and by the fact that it strikes a chord in everyone.

Whether you think she's a desperate loon or the feminist ideal, Blaire is drawing attention. And I had to date her.

Blaire has three main requirements for her future husband: He has to be between 25 and 31, Jewish and at least 5 feet 8 inches tall.

Friends claimed that I was misleading Blaire by this last point. But for the record, when I'm wearing shoes I am indeed 5-foot 8-inches tall. Or close enough.

Regardless, I e-mailed Blaire and a few days later she responded. I was in. She would make me her Man of the Week.

Initially, she questioned whether a guy who writes a dating column was really marriage-minded. The way I see it, I just have a different way of going about finding the right person. Her way, of course, is probably a lot more efficient.

So Blaire posted my picture and a brief bio of me on the site, allowing visitors to vote on whether we should date.

I solicited friends for votes, because I have no shame, and in the end I garnered about 60 percent of the vote - 1,500 to 1,000. Not bad, I thought.

But Blaire seemed skeptical. She wrote on her site: "In the few times that we've spoken on the phone he sounds like a fun guy, although I am thinking he may be a bit `young' for me."

I don't really know what "young" means when it is written in quotation marks, but I was pretty sure it wasn't a good thing.

And that's just one reason why I had sweaty palms. I was dating an international Internet sensation who was looking to get married immediately, who was already skeptical about my worthiness, who would undoubtedly be dismayed by my height, who would write about our date online the next day, and who had the entire Internet universe to compare me to.

I was so nervous I tried on different outfits for the date. One more time: I tried on different outfits for the date. Can you believe that? And can you believe that I just admitted that?

Blaire strolled toward me in front of the Cheesecake Factory wearing a stylish dress and looking very Carrie Bradshaw.

Five minutes in, I was gently chided for "going into reporter mode" when I started asking Blaire questions. Blaire is a dating coach by trade - that's ironic, right? - and used to work for the show Change of Heart. We're sort of in the same business, so I was curious.

And I was fascinated at the reaction she had gotten to the site. It was like Extreme Internet Dating. Blaire knew what she wanted and wasn't going to apologize for it. She said women her age all too often hide their desire to be married for fear of scaring off guys.

Good for her, I thought. But the I-know-what-I-want-attitude was still a little off-putting. I was pissed that I seemed to be discarded before we met for being "young," and was bothered that Blaire rebuffed my idea of doing something more interesting for our first date than getting a drink.

But the date was cheap (standard consolation for me if things don't work out), and it ended with a warm handshake.

The next day, I had the unique pleasure of finding out exactly what my date thought of me by checking her Web site: "Very nice guy, we had a good conversation, but no sparks and I do feel he is a bit young for me. I feel I am a much heavier soul than him - whereas he's more casual and light."

Heavier soul? Just like young-in-quotation-marks, I wasn't sure what that meant. Maybe if I had a heavier soul, I thought, I would know.

Casual? Was that because I wasn't dressed like Mr. Big?

Light? Was that a knock on my height in some way?

OK, calm down Katz. There are only hundreds of thousands of people reading about this.

Then Blaire saved me: "I know I'll keep in touch with him - as friends. So, ladies he's all yours . . . My advice would be for the younger women to contact him . . . He's a sincere guy, but I don't think ready for marriage now. More of a guy to have fun with. Ohh, and the older women can contact him too, if you like younger boy toys."

Boy toy! Sounded exciting.

A week later, Blaire's endorsement came through when she forwarded an e-mail for me from Bonnie in Orlando, Fla.:

"Sorry to see you are `not my husband' material - but perhaps that is a good thing, eh? . . . We think you are very cute."

A quick Google search showed Bonnie to be adorable. And there was nothing on the Internet about Bonnie demanding a husband in five months.

Now that's the kind of woman for me.
